Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

YOUR LIFE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

TESOL is a course in which students gain practical skills and  acquire further accreditations to become a language teacher in any country.

This course features workshops focused on English language teaching, especially within Christian missions. While tailored for English teachers, the theory applies broadly to language instruction. Students gain hands-on experience by stepping into the teacher role during simulated ESL/EFL classrooms—fostering both teaching mastery and meaningful connections that often lead to lasting, life-changing friendships.

All Are Welcome !

TESOL has no prerequisites, making it a great entry point for those new to YWAM or yet to complete a DTS. It offers a taste of life on a close-knit YWAM campus and the chance to build lasting connections. While a strong command of English is needed, it doesn’t have to be your first language—multilingual students are welcome!

What does a week in TESOL look like?

A week in DTS is packed full of learning, fun, and serving. You will spend time hearing from various speakers, learning more of who God is.

You will also take part in small groups and have intentional time with your staff each week to process what you are learning. Throughout the week our campus community gathers for prayer and worship as well as Thursday Community Night, when we welcome our community into a night of teaching and worship.

As a school you will also have the opportunity to go into Waikiki and the surrounding communities for evangelism and outreach. Our desire is that as you learn about God you also get to take his Kingdom into the island.

Students will be required to spend a few hours of each day to prepare lessons and complete assignments on their own.

Remaining time will be spent accomplishing work duties, focus workshops, or leisure activities. As preparation for practice teachings, students will spend some time in groups planning lessons with their teaching team.

With this in mind, come with a loving servant-hearted attitude that values teamwork—a necessary part of any large endeavor.

By the end of the course you will ...
    • Have the skills to start your own English classes
    • Be able to assess the levels of your students
    • Know how to design a syllabus
    • Be equipped to create fun, innovative, communicative lessons covering, reading, writing, listening, speaking, pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary
    • Know how to assess and evaluate your students
    • Learn the importance of knowing your students’ worldview and cultural backgrounds
    • Think through your teaching philosophy and approach and how this applies to your ministry / church / school / university / or language centre
    • Have a chance to obtain a certificate through an Australian Registered Training Organization (RTO)

Why our course is so different!

      • Each trainee has a mentor
      • Trainees learn through experiential, practical exercises that they can use in their own classrooms.
      • Our training is competency-based which means we work with you until you are a competent teacher. We don’t give up on you!
      • We train mono-lingual and multi-lingual English speakers incorporating a team approach in teaching English, building upon each other’s strengths
      • Supervised teaching practice with real students

Over two billion people are learning English, creating a global need for trained teachers—especially in missions. YWAM uses English teaching to build relationships and share the Gospel, yet many go without training. Our TESOL course equips those who are called to teach English effectively anywhere, with certification through UofN and an Australian RTO. Where is God calling you?

      Further Your Teaching Credentials

This TESOL course provides you with the credentials needed to obtain an Australian accredited certificate through an Australian Registered Training Organisation (RTO) by a process called Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Recognition of Current Competence (RCC). You can receive this accreditation after completion of our TESOL seminar. Additional fees apply. For more information email us at office@ywamhonolulu.com.
