The idea of YWAM began with a 20-year-old American college student who was spending some time in prayer. As he leaned back in his bed and looked up, he saw what he called a “mental movie.” He saw waves on a map. The waves turned into young people, going to every continent, sharing the good news about Jesus.

This radical idea, that young people could be missionaries, stayed with this young man, Loren Cunningham. Four years later, in 1960, he started an organization with that idea expressed even in its name: Youth With A Mission. The organization grew quickly, and is now one of the world’s largest Christian mission organizations, with a staff of nearly 16,000 people working in over 1,000 locations across more than 149 countries. We represent numerous denominations and speak hundreds of languages, with half of our staff from “non-western” countries, such as Brazil, Korea, Indonesia, India and Nepal. Together we train and send out more than 25,000 short term missionaries every year.

YWAM Honolulu Base History

In 1979 God’s direction was to start a Youth With A Mission training and sending Base in Honolulu. Twenty staff and students led by Kalafi Moala from the YWAM Kona’s April 1979 School of Evangelism were the first to pioneer the work in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, home of over 80% of the states population, the door of the South Pacific and Asia. Kalafi was burdened by the cry of Asia, where half of the world’s population was still beyond the reach of the Gospel. What was needed was a fresh wave of young missionaries committed to the task of evangelizing the unreached nations beyond the Pacific. Soon Pioneer Ministries, as it was known back then was born.

When they first came to the island looking for the right place, God spoke to them to settle in the Manoa Valley. (Interestingly, Manoa Valley originally housed the first missionaries and their families on Oahu). Manoa Valley is located just 3 miles from downtown Honolulu and the beaches and 15 minutes from the Honolulu International Airport. So they believed God for a 3.5-acre parcel of land located at the mouth of the valley directly behind the University of Hawaii. On the property were 5 military bungalows (transplanted years later by the owner) and eight houses. In September 1980, the owner of the property was not interested in us; therefore our first two DTS’s bounced around from garage to a front room of a house in the back of the valley. During those schools many hours of prayer went into seeing the Lord bring about His desire for us.

One year later, September 1981, the owner’s brother decided to retire from managing the property and negotiations began. A six-year lease was drawn up. Praise the Lord for His faithfulness! As the first small group of pioneers moved onto the Base, it didn’t quite look like it does today. The Tin Cathedral was a dirt floored boat shed, jungle covered much of the property, and many of the houses were totally trashed.

Gradually, they cleaned up the houses, cut down the jungle, set up an office and began making improvements. To this day, improvements continue – though it seems we often stay just one step ahead of the termites. We are grateful for the wonderful blessing God has given us in these 3 prime Manoa acres. We have approximately 45 Base, DTS, KDTS, SOME and SBSCC staff and up to 70 students.

Pioneering the Base was difficult but rewarding. Over the years the Lord has changed thousands of lives and will continue to do so as students come here and are trained and sent throughout the South Pacific, Asia and the world. YWAM Bases in the South Pacific and Asia have been pioneered through us and we are trusting God to continue to use us to impact the world for Jesus!

The Discipleship Training School (DTS) in Honolulu is an intense 5 1/2 month course designed to challenge and stretch young people to a deeper relationship with the Lord. We are committed to facilitate the fulfillment of your vision, dreams and ambitions in the Lord. Then take them to the nations of the earth. The school is aimed specifically at 18-30 year olds and runs three times a year. Most say it has radically changed their lives and helped them get to know God in a deep and personal way. The DTS program in Honolulu begins with a 12-week lecture/teaching phase followed by a 10-11 week field assignment or outreach in another nation.

DTS is the gateway into YWAM (Youth With A Mission). YWAM is an inter-denominational, international, mission organization with a heart to reach the nations with the gospel of Jesus Christ, with missionaries and training schools in over 250 locations around the world. (www.ywam.org) DTS is the prerequisite for any other YWAM school and joining the staff at any one of our locations.

The three months of lecture phase are all about personal application of truth, personal character development, and lifestyle of obedience to Jesus Christ. Topics include Character of God, Forgiveness and Repentance, and Evangelism. Every week a different speaker shares on a topic through lectures and application times. Other activities include worship, intercession, sports, work duties and lots of adventures on the island. The lecture phase is followed by two and a half months of outreach, where we head out into the nations to make Jesus known through evangelism, discipleship, church ministry, worship, intercession, and drama/dance.

The DTS lecture phase

Welcome to our Honolulu Ohana! This is your opportunity to step out of the life you’re living, get away from your distractions and set aside 5 1/2 months to cultivate your walk with the Lord. Through small groups, worship, prayer times, and inspiring lectures you will begin to see your life change as you develop a biblical worldview and heart for the nations. Nestled in the Manoa Valley, 3 miles from Waikiki and minutes from the University of Hawaii, we provide many ways for students to put their faith into action around our island. Each week will include work duties, community outreach, and involvement in local churches. The core of the 12 week lecture phase are distinct sessions taught by world-renowned speakers as well as emerging YWAM leaders. They include topics such as:

The Character and Nature of God
How to hear the voice of God
Holy Spirit
Spiritual Disciplines
Servant-hood
Destiny in Christ
Spiritual warfare
Evangelism and missions
Cross-cultural ministry
Fear of the Lord
Money Management
Biblical Worldview

The outreach phase

Outreach is all about knowing God and making God known. The school will split into smaller teams and head off to preach the gospel in the nations. Our Honolulu base focuses on Southeast Asia and the Pacific islands. Just think, 6 months from now you could find yourself in a small hut in Calcutta drinking Indian Chai with new friends. You could be reaching out to Buddhist college students in Chiang Mai, Thailand, backpacking through Nepal, or teaching English in Cambodia, all for the glory of God. We believe that eternity begins the moment we commit our lives to Jesus Christ, and living for Him is exciting and full of adventure, an abundant life in Him. It’s all about bringing the kingdom of God to earth, seeing God’s will done on earth as it is in heaven. See the power of God working through you as you obey His command to go into the nations. Preach His word to the broken and needy, pray for the sick and see them healed by the power of the Holy Spirit through you as you step out in faith on your DTS outreach.

Cost: Lecture Phase $3900
Outreach Phase $1900 plus airfare and visa

SBS in the Hawaiian Islands

Now accepting applications

Beginning April 2012 YWAM Honolulu and University of the Nations Kona will be embarking on a new and exciting partnership with 4 months of New Testament studies in Honolulu followed by 5 months of Old Testament Studies in Kona. The starting date for the school is April 2, 2012. There will be a transition week between NT and OT from July 30 - August 5 (the inter-island flight date is yet to be decided). The ending date for the school is December 19, 2012

What is SBS?

Just over 30 years ago, the Lord spoke to Loren Cunningham that YWAM needed a school that focused solely on the Bible, and studied all 66 books in nine months. At that time there were no schools inside or outside of YWAM that did this. In 1981, the first SBS was born right here in beautiful Kona, Hawaii, and we have been running them ever since!

Why SBS?

Through the years we have heard the testimony of hundreds of students that have taken the SBS. Our SBS graduates speak of how knowing the Bible gave them a solid foundation for their life and the ministry to which they are called. As Christians, we need to know what we believe, and why we believe it. This is why a Biblical foundation is essential. Learning the word of God for ourselves establishes this solid foundation for whatever we do in life. There is no other way to gain such a thorough understanding of the whole Bible in such a short time span. Those who have taken the SBS can honestly say that it is indeed a great school! This school will equip you for whatever lies ahead, whether you are called to a full-time Christian ministry or to a regular job back home.

Why Hawaii?

The reach of SBS Hawaii students stretches beyond the traditional classroom. Our SBS program offers students the opportunity to learn through field trips, community outreaches, intercession and worship. Our staffs are committed to mentoring our students. One on one discipleship and small groups are a part of the SBS curriculum. During the SBS our students will have the opportunity to learn from respected Bible scholars, Old Testament archaeologists, New Testament historians, and a wide variety of Bible teachers passionate for seeing God’s Word brought to the nations. Our lectures will help students come to a better understanding of the Word and its historical settings, which in turn will help unlock a whole new depth of insight during their own personal study. Our students typically spend 40 or more hours per week immersing themselves in the Word, and studying for themselves all the truths that God has given us through the Bible. The great cultural diversity of our campus is another blessing of doing SBS here, you will be exposed to many cultures and interact with people from different nationalities.

Outreach

Our goal in SBS is to equip our students to study God’s Word for themselves and then to give it out to others. After the students complete nine months of intense study they have the opportunity to share with others the riches of God’s Word. An optional eight to twelve week outreach is offered to all SBS students who want to take the opportunity to practice what they have learned and pass on these skills and principles to others. Most of our SBS outreaches go to Asia or the South Pacific nations, and focus on teaching the Bible and inductive Bible study skills to new believers, churches, pastors, or anyone willing to listen.

SBS in the Hawaiian Islands or Chronological SBS

SBS in the Hawaiian Islands

This SBS will be traditional in format but unique in location. It begins in Honolulu on the beautiful island of Oahu with the New Testament, and ends with the Old Testament in Kailua-Kona on the big, volcanic island of Hawai’i. Students have the opportunity to study God’s Word, live and learn in two YWAM communities, and experience God’s amazing creative attributes on not just one, but two, of Hawaii’s most beautiful islands! This school is offered in two phases, with the New Testament followed by the Old Testament. In this way, the Old Testament is studied from the perspective of the New Testament authors. The student may choose to do the New Testament phase only, for which those pursuing a degree can earn 16 credits. It is recommended, however, that the student completes both the New Testament and the Old Testament, for which 36 credits can be earned. The school starts with the New Testament on April 2, 2012, in Honolulu. Staff and students fly to Kailua-Kona in early August to study the Old Testament, completing the entire Bible on December 19, 2012. The optional outreach will be launched early 2013 after the Christmas break.

Chronological SBS

Unlike almost every other SBS in the world we also offer a CSBS in which we will be studying the Bible chronologically. We will start with Genesis, and continue our study through the Old Testament chronologically first before moving to the New Testament. We will see God’s plan of the redemption of mankind unfold as He continues to pursue and interact with each successive generation. We will feel the anticipation and hope in the coming Messiah as we study through the prophecies of the Prophets. Then with a greater understanding of the Old Testament we will dive into the Gospel of Matthew to see how our Messiah has fulfilled the Old Testament! We will have a more profound appreciation of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, and a greater love for Jesus our Savior. We will then continue through all the books of the New Testament as they were written, culminating with a deeper understanding of the victory of Jesus in the book of Revelation! The Chronological School of Biblical Studies is a nine month school which trains students in Inductive Bible Study. When you apply for the CSBS you are embarking on a 9 month journey through the Bible, starting with Genesis and going all the way through Revelation. The school starts on September 27, 2012 and consists of 3 phases with a short break between phases and followed by an optional outreach phase

Pre-requisites

Completion of the YWAM-DTS (Discipleship Training School and Field Assignment — IDS 701/702) or YWAM-CDTS (Crossroads Discipleship Training School — IDS 703/704).

Credits

Thirty-six (36) semester-equivalent credits will be earned upon successful completion of the School of Biblical Studies (CCM 311/312/313). These credits may be applied to a U of N degree program or transferred partially or fully to some other colleges and universities.

School fees and dates

SBS in the Hawaiian Islands is offered in April. For more information contact the Admissions Office (808) 326-4433. School fees include tuition, supplies, housing and meals.

What others have said

“As a seminary professor, with almost 30 years teaching and leadership in accredited theological education, I know of no better undergraduate preparation in Bible than the basic SBS syllabus. My SBS students, both in Europe and North America, have consistently exhibited the highest motivation, while the inductive method of instruction has guaranteed them a familiarity with the text which is the envy of most seminarians”

Carl E. Armerding, B.D. Ph. D, Academic director” Carl E. Armerding, BA, BD, MA, PHD, is a distinguished Old Testament scholar who served as a founding faculty member and second president of Regent College. He is emeritus professor, Schloss Mittersill Study Centre (Austria) and senior fellow of Oxford Centre for Mission Studies. Author of The Old Testament and Criticism and several commentaries, he co-edited A Guide to Biblical Prophecy and edited Evangelicals and Liberation

Come and take your SBS here in Hawaii! We set high standards for students both academically and in discipleship, and challenge their way of thinking and approaching the Bible!

Mission Spotlight

This page is dedicated to YWAM Honolulu staff serving or preparing to serve in the Frontiers

Aloha, we are the Burr family: David, Erin and Malia. David came to YWAM Honolulu in 1998 and during his first year here in Honolulu God began unfolding piece by piece a vision for something He wanted to see take place among the South Pacific Islands.
Erin grew up with many dreams which included missions and Africa. She came to Honolulu in 2004 and felt God bringing that alongside a calling to the Pacific Islands and the ministry of reconciliation.

Long ago England and France colonized nations all over the world building their empires. Much of what took place was devastating to the people they conquered. Consequently however there are English & French speaking countries all across the earth, and God can move powerfully today through what was once man’s great pride.

Aloha, we are the Burr family: David, Erin and Malia. David did DTS in B.C. Canada in Sept. 1996. Erin did her DTS in Atlanta, Georgia in Sept. 2002. David came to YWAM Honolulu in 1998 and during his first year here in Honolulu God began unfolding piece by piece a vision for something He wanted to see take place among the South Pacific Islands. God spoke regarding the nation of French Polynesia, known for its main island Tahiti, and this people’s inheritance in Africa. Much of the Muslim world including many unreached Muslim people groups are found in French speaking African nations. Who will go and preach the Gospel of Christ to them?

God revealed to David the destiny and capability of French Polynesians to do just that. Having a common language and cultural similarities Tahitians, who were once the mission field of Europeans, and now the ideal mission force to other parts of the old French empire specifically West & North Africa.

Erin grew up with many dreams which included missions and Africa. She came to Honolulu in 2004 and felt God bringing that alongside a calling to the Pacific Islands and the ministry of reconciliation. We were married in 2006 and have been together now in Honolulu many years carrying the vision to see French speaking people from the Pacific mobilized into missions. Next year we are taking a giant step to see this realized. A small team is gathering in Sydney, Australia with a goal of moving to Tahiti September 2012 to pioneer a new YWAM location. We will be moving to Sydney in April 2012 to join this team and then move on to Tahiti in September to begin planting a new YWAM base.
